Hair Colour 101: Your Hair Colour Terminology Guide

To make sure you love your new look, here’s a quick rundown of some hair colour basics. These terms will help you understand your Harmony stylist when they are explaining what’s possible and how they are processing your hair colour.

Hair ColourPermanent Hair Colour: This is your strongest type of hair colour and is mainly used to cover grey hair, or to take your natural hair colour a couple shades lighter. It’s vibrant, rich and results can last a while.

Semi Permanent Hair Colour: Typically semi-permanent colour washes out in a couple of shampoos, so it’s most popular with anyone who likes to change their hair colour frequently.

Toners: Toners are sometimes a necessary ‘extra step’ to get great colour. We use toners over hair that has been lightened or bleached, and they are usually applied to change the tone of your hair or to remove unwanted brassy tones.

Highlights/Lowlights: Highlights are when a lighter or brighter shade than your natural hair colour is used throughout the hair. They are applied using mesh or foil and either as a full, half or partial head of highlights. Lowlights are the exact opposites of highlights – they are darker pieces of hair usually reserved for the layers underneath and around the neck.

Root Tint: This colour application technique is where colour is applied to the roots only and is often a popular choice when covering grey hair.

Please note: All clients are required to have a colour patch test 48 hour before any hair colouring service at Harmony. This allows us to check for any skin sensitivities and ensures safety for all our clients.
