How does LED Light Therapy work?

The treatment involves the use of a matrix of small LEDs that emit a uniform beam of light when held up close to the treatment area. No UV rays are projected and when LED light interacts with the skin, the energy causes the cells to increase their production of collagen and elastin.

The blue, red and infrared wavelengths produced by LED lights promote skin health; the blue light helps to kill off bacteria, the red light helps stimulate healing, while the infrared light targets deeper cell layers and is used to treat wrinkles, sagging skin and more.

Scientifically, blue LED therapy is said to break down the naturally occurring photosensitiser, Coproporphyrin III, found in P.acnes (acne causing) bacteria, eradicating them from the skin’s surface. It can also apparently be used in the treatment of Actinic keratosis (a skin thickening condition which results in scaly patches of dense cells on the face and body). The process activates 5-aminolaevulinic acid (a substance which attacks rapidly multiplying cells and tumours) and reduces the severity of the lesions.

Red light treatments are said to boost collagen production and increase blood flow to the face and can be used to promote healing following other skin treatments such as microdermabrasion, laser therapy and peels. This is due to a boost they provide to fibroblast activity (a type of cell that initiates the synthesis of collagen and other connective tissues) and a combination of infrared and red light treatments allegedly improves the quality of the collagen produced as well.

After a consultation and before you step into (well, lie underneath) the light, it is likely that you will have your face cleansed and if you are undergoing a rejuvenation treatment, a light exfoliation treatment to freshen up the skin. During treatment, goggles and eye protectors must be worn to protect your peepers (as the light is fairly bright- like soaking up intense sun on a beach).

The LEDs themselves are set in a grid and suspended on an arm a short distance from your face for the duration of the treatment. Compact and quiet (the noise has been likened to that of a small electric fan), the equipment is unlikely to distract you as you relax and let the rays do their job.

Is LED Light Therapy for me?

LED Therapy can benefit anyone who wants to treat scars, fight acne, reduce wrinkles or just generally make their skin look younger and healthier.

Its ability to increase regeneration of connective tissue, erase sunspots and allegedly improve lymphatic system function and circulation means it has the potential to help improve the appearance of most people’s skin.

Those whose skin is prone to photosensitivity may want to avoid LED light therapy, just in case the exposure triggers a reaction. Similarly, those who suffer from epilepsy or porphyria may want to check with your Harmony beauty therapist before booking a session. It is also recommended that mothers-to-be get permission from their doctor before undergoing LED light therapy.
